Lyrics

Aurora - Words & Music by Aly Aleigha & Brett Winters

Verse 1:
Out here
under the stars
With the water lapping up against the shore
The skies
Come alive
Mimicking the movement of the water in the night
The colors dancing bright

Verse 2:
This night
Brings life to these bones
Drove out to chase the remnant stories left untold
The one we wrote out on the coast
The same horizon that our eyes have never known
Sweet troubles ‘till we’re home
Divided and whole
Divided and whole

[instrumental]

Verse 3:
Your eyes
Tell everything
Somewhere in the boundlessness our stories intertwined
Pull back the skies
Unfolding time
Unveil the mysteries of how we came to light
Your constellation eyes
Your colors dancing bright

About the Song

Aly Aleigha drove out to the middle of nowhere one night to see if she could find the Northern Lights. She called her now-husband who she was long-distance dating at the time, and they both saw the Aurora together, even though they were many miles apart. The lights moved in their epic dance all around her, brighter and more incredibly than she could have dreamed. It was a magical experience that made them feel connected in spite of the distance.

While falling asleep, Aly dreamed beautiful sounds of the Aurora. She held onto it and came out of that dreamscape just enough to sing what she could communicate from her dream into a voice memo on her phone before falling back asleep.

Later, she brought that voice memo to her new friend Brett Winters, a local indie-folk artist and producer. Aly had only one verse and the instrumental section in her mind, so she invited Brett to co-write the rest of the song with her.

What happened was magic.

Brett and Aly finished writing the lyrics together, and then began working on the instrumentation. Aly expressed how she wanted the instrumental section to feel like the dancing Aurora, and Brett made it come to life perfectly with his production skills. They spent many months working on the song together until it was almost complete.

Aly and her husband were married August 17th, 2024. At their wedding, they read love letters to each other, which their videographer recorded.

After her wedding, Aly asked Brett if they could incorporate the audio from those love letters into the song. Brett loved the idea and they added the audio in. Can you hear it?

The song was almost finished.

One night when Aly and her husband were on a date, they were driving home from dinner and her husband drove a different way home. He said the Northern Lights were supposed to be out tonight, and he knew a good place to go see them. They drove to a beach and no sooner had they arrived than the light show began.

The sky came alive, and now they were able to experience the Aurora together in person. Aly’s husband asked to hear the song she and Brett had been working on, so they listened to it together while watching the Aurora above them.

Aly set up her phone on the sand, set a timer, and joined her husband, taking photos that would become the album art for the song.

The song is set to be released on Aug 17th, 2025—Aly and her husband’s first wedding anniversary.
